Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Understanding PCOS

PCOS is a complex yet common endocrine-metabolic condition in which the ovaries produce an excess of male sex hormones ( androgens ).

This condition affects up to 15% of women of reproductive age. This interferes with menstruation and ovulation since women are often not making enough hormones to trigger ovulation. Instead, small cysts that release androgens form on the ovaries. High levels of androgens can cause facial hair, acne, hair loss, mood changes, irregular periods, excess body hair, weight gain, and skin tags. Some women with PCOS also have insulin resistance, but this is not the case with all women. While the exact cause of PCOS is not known, It is believed that genetics plays a role in PCOS since it is often seen in families

How can Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine Help?

Research suggests that Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine affects the production of beta-endorphins which then causes secretion of gonadotropin releasing hormone that then affects ovulation, menstruation, and fertility in a positive manner. Acupuncture and herbs also improve insulin resistance by either upregulating insulin receptors or by inhibiting pathways related to glucose metabolism. This causes insulin and glucose levels to stabilize with regular, consistent treatments.
