Indigestion During Pregnancy

Understanding Indigestion During Pregnancy

Acid reflux, more commonly called heartburn, is pain, discomfort, or a burning sensation in your stomach or chest caused by the counterflow of stomach acid through the lower esophageal sphincter and into the esophagus. Acid reflux is the name for the counterflow of acid into the esophagus while heartburn is the term used to describe the feeling of acid reflux.

More than 50% of women have moderate to severe heartburn during pregnancy especially during the second and third trimesters. Shifting hormones, a growing baby, and relaxation of the muscles between the stomach and the esophagus are the most common causes of acid reflux during pregnancy.

How can acupuncture help?

Research suggests acupuncture can effectively inhibit the amount of acid and bile reflux inside of the esophagus. Acupuncture also increases the strength of peristalsis in the esophagus, improves lower esophageal sphincter length and pressure, and improves gastrointestinal motility.
