Gestational Hypertension

Understanding Gestational Hypertension

Gestational Hypertension is an increase in maternal blood pressure above 140/90. It is usually diagnosed around the 20th week of pregnancy in women who do not have a history of high blood pressure. Gestational hypertension does not include other symptoms, such as protein in the urine. However, if not managed properly GH can progress to preeclampsia.
Preeclampsia is diagnosed when a woman has gestational hypertension plus protein in her urine. Gestational hypertension must be monitored closely by an obstetrician or a midwife since it increases the risk for placental abruption, compromised blood flow to the liver, kidneys, uterus, placenta, and increases the risk of stillbirth.

How can acupuncture help?

Consistent acupuncture treatments are a safe and proven adjunct treatment for lowering blood pressure during pregnancy. Acupuncture reduces blood pressure through its effect on the vascular endothelium, the renin - angiotensin - aldosterone system, and the neuroendocrine system. Research also suggests that acupuncture can help control blood pressure enough to keep it from progressing to more serious forms of high blood pressure like preeclampsia or HELLP syndrome.
