Endometriosis

Understanding Endometriosis

Endometriosis is when tissue that is similar to tissue from the lining of the uterus or endometrium grows outside of the uterus. This tissue can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, ligaments that hold the uterus in place, the bowel, the bladder, the rectum, and cervix. The tissue can sometimes even be found in the lungs, brain, and skin. Endometriosis affects 11% of women with about 35 % of those women suffering from fertility issues due to endometriosis. The most common symptoms are pain during menstruation and/ or sex, mid cycle spotting, intestinal pain, and digestive complaints like nausea.

While the exact cause of endometriosis remains elusive, there are several leading hypotheses including genetics, problems with immune surveillance, high bacterial load, retrograde menstruation, hormone imbalance, and improper angiogenesis.

How Traditional Chinese Medicine can help

The goal with Allopathic medicine is to remove or reduce the lesions. However, that does not address the underlying imbalance that caused the endometriosis in the first place but Traditional Chinese Medicine can. Research shows acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas can mediate the immune system, balance hormones, reduce bacterial load, and regulate blood vessel formation.

In our clinical practice, we have seen that with consistent acupuncture treatments and herbal formula support there is reduced pain during menstruation, reduced mid cycle bleeding, improved digestion, and an increase in clinical pregnancy and live birth rates.
